Conservatory
of Flowers
The historic Conservatory of Flowers, built in 1878, was constructed entirely of glass and wood, including pre-fabricated wood arches, purlins, and decorative elements that also performed as structural elements. The Conservatory was severely damaged in 1995 by strong winds, primarily due to its deteriorated wood structure and an inadequate lateral system. Tennebaum-Manheim Engineers (in association with ARG) were contracted as Prime Consultant, providing structural engineering services and project administration. Upgrade design required enhancing the structure with light-steel reinforcement that would not impact the architectural fabric. TME surveyed the existing conditions, produced a preliminary design, and construction documents, and performed the construction administration.
