Illinois Street Intermodal Bridge

TME performed three distinct services on this new steel and reinforced concrete bascule-span bridge in San Francisco, California.  First, the seismic analysis of the bridge founded on deep piles in soft bay mud was performed. Secondly, we analyzed an independent pile-supported roadway approach to one end of the 10-span bridge.  The structural model was developed using SAP 2000, and included nonlinear soil behavior through ground-level inelastic springs representing the lateral stiffness properties of single piles or groups of piles driven deep into soft bay mud.  We investigated the effects of different pile layouts and abutment tie-back schemes on the seismic response of the bridge, and iterated our analysis to achieve economy in design through interaction with the bridge structural designer. Thirdly, TME did independent calculations as a check on the design.
